Privacy and storage
Where your data lives, what syncs between browsers, and what is sent where when you use AI.
SimpleFill is built so that your data stays yours. Here’s exactly where everything lives and when anything leaves your computer.
Everything stays in your browser
Your snippets, folders, Blocks, Fields, saved forms, AI actions, AI Memory, and site rules are stored in your browser’s extension storage, on your computer. SimpleFill doesn’t store your extension data on its servers, and there’s no SimpleFill account for your library.
The team plans and SimpleFill AI, coming soon, are optional, and use our servers only for what you choose to share or send.
What syncs
Only your Settings, like your trigger and which features are on, use your browser’s sync storage. If you’ve turned on sync in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, your settings follow you to your other computers.
Your library doesn’t sync. To use it in another browser or on another computer, export and import it.
When something leaves your computer
SimpleFill connects to the internet only when you ask it to:
| When you… | What’s sent | To whom |
|---|---|---|
| Run an AI action with a cloud provider | The text you’re working on, the action’s prompt, details from the page around it, and your Memory notes if the action uses them (see below) | The AI provider you set up, like OpenAI or Anthropic, directly from your browser |
| Tidy your AI Memory with a cloud provider | Your Memory notes | That AI provider, directly from your browser |
| Run an AI action with a local model | Nothing leaves your computer | Your own computer |
| Activate or check your license | Your license key | Our payment provider, Polar |
| Add something from the marketplace | A request for that template or add-on | simplefill.app |
SimpleFill doesn’t send anything in the background, and it doesn’t check for updates on its own. Your browser’s extension store keeps the extension itself up to date.
What AI actions send
Besides the text you’re working on, every AI action sends a little about the page, so the result fits: the page’s title, its address without anything after a ? or #, the text box’s label, and the visible text just before and after the text box. Run Ask AI on a page with nothing selected, and it sends the page’s main text. SimpleFill leaves out hidden text, scripts, buttons, and other text boxes.
Actions with Use memory on also send all your Memory notes. Nothing is added to Memory unless you add it.
All of this is sent only when you run an action, and only to the provider that action uses. See What AI sees.
API keys
Your AI API keys are stored in your browser, are sent only to the provider they belong to, and are never included when you export your data.
Team plans and SimpleFill AI
Team, Enterprise, and SimpleFill AI are coming soon. Each is something you choose to turn on. If you don’t, nothing on this page changes.
- Team and Enterprise: snippets and folders you share with your team are stored on our servers, so your teammates get them and they stay in sync. Everything you don’t share stays in your browser, as it does today.
- SimpleFill AI: when an action uses it, what that action would send to an AI provider goes to SimpleFill instead, which passes it to the AI model and sends back the result. We don’t store your text. Actions that use your own API key or a local model work exactly as described above.
Smart Fields and add-ons
Smart Fields and add-ons read details from the page you’re on, like its title or the name on a profile, only at the moment you use them. The value goes into your text box and nowhere else. Add-ons never read password fields.
Saved forms
Saved forms never include passwords, and SimpleFill skips password fields when scanning a page.
Permissions
SimpleFill asks for access to the websites you visit, because it needs to insert text into their text boxes and read details for Smart Fields. It asks for clipboard access only when you turn on a feature that needs it.
Keep your data safe
Because your library lives in your browser, uninstalling SimpleFill or clearing your browser’s extension data deletes it. Export a backup now and then.
