Mouse actions
Click a button, a switch, or an option in a list between the text of a snippet, where keys can’t reach.
A mouse action is a Smart Field that does something with the mouse for you, instead of typing text. Click clicks an element you choose on a website, like a button, a switch, or an option in a list.
Use it where a key press can’t reach. Many sites draw their own dropdowns, toggles, and buttons, and those often answer only the mouse: Tab skips them, and Space or the arrow keys do nothing. A Click works on them like your own click does:

[Click “Choose a country”] [Click “India”]
[Click “Newsletter”]
[Click “Sign up”]
Each [Click …] stands for a Click pill. This types the name, opens the country list and picks India, turns on the newsletter switch, then sends the form.
Add a Click
- In a rich snippet, type
{{and pick Click, or use Insert field > Mouse Actions. Its settings open right away. - Under Tab, choose the open tab with the website on it. Open the page first if it isn’t open yet.
- Click Choose elements. SimpleFill switches to that tab and shows click each element to click, in order at the top.
- Move the pointer over the page. SimpleFill outlines each element and says what it is, like Button “Sign up”. Click the one you want. It turns green, and the page doesn’t react, so a link won’t open and a form won’t send.
- Click Done at the top of the page. You’re back in SimpleFill, with the element under Element to click. Click Save changes.
The pill is named after the element, like Click “Sign up”, and has a mouse pointer icon. To choose a different element later, click the pill and click Choose again. Press Esc on the page to stop choosing without keeping anything.
The banner at the top doesn’t get in the way: point at something behind it and it fades, and a click goes through it to the page. Only its Cancel and Done buttons take clicks.
Clicks work inside snippets and Blocks. A Click needs its element chosen in its settings, so add it to a rich snippet.
Click several things in a row
To click one thing after another, like a date box and then a day in the calendar it opens, click each of them in order before you click Done. The pill clicks the first one, and Save changes adds a Click pill after it for each of the others.
Open something before you choose
Some elements are only there once something is open, like the days of a calendar or the options of a dropdown. Hold Alt (Option on a Mac) and click, and the page reacts as usual: the calendar opens, and nothing is chosen. Let go of the key and click the day to choose it.
The page gets an ordinary click, without the key, so an Alt-clicked link, like the × on a pop-up, opens or closes as usual instead of downloading. Use it to close a newsletter pop-up or a cookie banner that’s in the way, too.
For a calendar, that’s:
- Click the date box, to choose it.
- Hold Alt and click the date box again, to open the calendar.
- Click the day, to choose it.
- Click Done. Your snippet now has a Click for the date box and one for the day.
Pick a date in a calendar
A day you choose in a calendar is kept as its date, like Date Oct 28, 2026 in a calendar. In its pill’s settings, Date to click sets which date the snippet picks each time:
- The date chosen: the same date every time.
- Today: today’s date, whatever day you use the snippet.
- Days from today: a date counted from today.
30is a month from today, and-1is yesterday.
SimpleFill finds the day by its date, so it doesn’t matter that the calendar now calls it Today or selected. If the calendar opens on another month, SimpleFill moves it with its own next and previous buttons, up to three years either way.
This works with the calendars sites build with common libraries, like MUI, Ant Design, Mantine, shadcn/ui, flatpickr, react-datepicker, jQuery UI and Bootstrap Datepicker, and with most others that put the date on each day.
A browser’s own date box, the kind that opens the browser’s calendar, can’t be clicked into: that calendar isn’t part of the page. Type the date into it instead, with the Current Date Smart Field, like {{date}}, or {{date | addDays(30)}} for a date a month from today (see Transforms). SimpleFill writes it the way the date box takes it.
For an offer that starts today and ends in a month, that’s four pills: Click the start date box, Click today, Click the end date box, Click today + 30 days.
A saved form picks dates in calendars the same way, with no snippet to write: see One-click form fill.
Wait after a click
A click often opens something: a list, a menu, or the next step of a form. SimpleFill waits a moment after each click, and if the element the next Click needs isn’t there yet, it keeps looking for up to 5 seconds. If a button is turned off until the fields before it are filled, it waits for it to turn on.
For a page that’s slower, open the pill’s settings and set Wait after (ms), up to 10 seconds. 1000 is one second.
How the text around a click goes in
- Text after a click goes where the focus is then. Clicking a field puts the cursor in it. Clicking Add a phone number on a site that adds a phone field and moves you into it means the text after it goes there.
- Spaces and new lines beside a click are left out, so a pill can sit between words or on a line of its own.
- You can mix clicks and key presses.
Ann Lee {{tab}} ann@example.com [Click “Agree”] {{enter}}types, moves on with Tab, ticks a box the site drew itself, and sends the form with Enter.
Each Click works on its own site
A Click remembers the website you chose its element on, and clicks only there. Used anywhere else, the snippet types what comes before the Click, then stops and tells you why. This keeps a snippet from clicking a button of the same name on another site.
If the element isn’t on the page, SimpleFill also stops there and says so, rather than typing the rest of the snippet in the wrong place. It stops too when it finds more than one element that fits and can’t tell which you meant, like two Delete buttons. This can happen when a site changes its page. Open the pill and click Choose again.
A Click’s settings show the page you chose its element on, like example.com/join, but it works on any page of that site. Only the page’s address is kept, without anything after a ? or a #, which can hold a sign-in token or your details.
How SimpleFill finds the element again
Pages change, so SimpleFill keeps several ways of finding each element, and tries the most reliable first:
- Where the previous click opened something, like a calendar, a list, or a menu, it looks in that first. The end date’s calendar has a 31 as well as the start date’s, and only the one just opened is meant.
- A day in a calendar, by its date.
- An id or a name the site gave the element, which stays the same when the page changes around it.
- An id the site’s code made for it, which stays the same while the page is built the same way.
- Where it is on the page, but only while it still says what it said, so a button that moved isn’t mistaken for another.
- What it says.
A button whose text changes and that moves at the same time may need choosing again.
Examples
Pick from a list a site draws itself. [Click “Choose a plan”] [Click “Pro”] opens the list and picks Pro. Choose both in one go: click the list, Alt-click it to open it, click Pro, then Done.
Turn on a switch. [Click “Email me updates”] flips a toggle that Space doesn’t reach.
Go to the next step. Ann Lee {{tab}} ann@example.com [Click “Next”], with Wait after set to 1000 on the Click, fills the first step of a form, moves on, and gives the next step a second to load.
Good to know
- Clicks need no extra permission.
- Choosing an element works in any tab with a website in it. If SimpleFill can’t choose there, reload the tab and try again.
- An element inside its own frame, like a payment provider’s card box, is clicked only when the snippet starts in that same frame.
- A few sites accept only clicks from a real mouse and ignore the ones SimpleFill makes.
- A click types nothing, so it takes no Transforms and can’t be used in a calculation or a condition.
- When SimpleFill copies a snippet instead of inserting it, for example because the field is gone, its clicks are left out.
