Fields

Key presses

Press Tab, Enter, and other keys between the text of a snippet, so one snippet can fill and send a whole form.

A key press is a Smart Field that presses a key for you, like Tab or Enter, instead of typing text. Put one between each answer, and a single snippet fills a whole form and sends it:

Ann Lee {{tab}} ann@example.com {{tab}} India {{tab}} {{space}} {{enter}}

This types the name, moves to the email box with Tab, types the email, moves to the country list and picks India, moves to the checkbox and checks it with Space, then sends the form with Enter.

Add a key press

In a rich snippet, type {{ and pick a key, or use Insert field > Key Presses. It shows as a pill with a keyboard icon.

In a plain snippet, type its shortcut in curly braces, like {{tab}} or {{enter}}.

Key presses work inside snippets and Blocks. Typing ;tab on a page stays as typed.

Keys

KeyShortcutWhat it does
TabtabMoves to the next field and selects its text, so what comes next replaces it
Shift+TabshifttabMoves back to the previous field
EnterenterSends the form, presses the button or link you’re on, or starts a new line in a text area
SpacespaceTypes a space, or checks the checkbox or presses the button you’re on
BackspacebackspaceDeletes the character before the cursor, or the selected text
DeletedeleteDeletes the character after the cursor, or the selected text
Escapeescape, escCloses a menu or a pop-up
Up Arrow, Down Arrowarrowup, arrowdownPicks the option above or below in a dropdown, or moves the cursor a line
Left Arrow, Right Arrowarrowleft, arrowrightMoves the cursor a character, or picks the next radio button

In a chat box that sends on Enter, {{enter}} sends the message.

Press a key more than once, or wait

Click a key press pill to open its settings:

  • Times to press: press the key up to 50 times in a row. Three Tabs skip three fields.
  • Wait after (ms): wait up to 10 seconds after the key, for a page that opens a menu or loads the next step first. 1000 is one second.

Then click Save changes.

How the text around a key goes in

  • Text after a key goes where you’ve moved to. After a Tab, that’s the next field.
  • A dropdown picks the option you name. After a Tab onto a country list, India picks India, and so does ind.
  • Spaces and new lines beside a key are left out, so Ann {{tab}} Lee fills Ann and Lee, not Ann and Lee. A pill can also sit on a line of its own. To type a space, use {{space}}.
  • On a checkbox or a button, text is skipped. Use {{space}} to check it.

Examples

Join a newsletter. ann@example.com {{enter}} fills in the email and sends the form.

Send a chat message. Thanks, I'll look into it today! {{enter}} answers and sends in one go.

Choose from a list. {{tab}} {{arrowdown}} {{arrowdown}} moves to the next field, a dropdown, and picks the option two below the current one.

Good to know

  • Key presses need no extra permission.
  • They work in text boxes, dropdowns, checkboxes, radio buttons, and rich text editors.
  • Browser shortcuts like Ctrl+S or ⌘A aren’t available: websites can’t press those.
  • Tab can’t go into a field that sits in its own frame, like a card number box from a payment provider. Its text is skipped, and the next Tab moves past it.
  • A key press types nothing, so it takes no Transforms and can’t be used in a calculation or a condition.
  • When SimpleFill copies a snippet instead of inserting it, for example because the field is gone, the key presses are left out.
  • For a dropdown, switch, or button a site draws itself, which Tab skips and keys don’t press, use a Click.
  • To fill a form the same way every time without pressing keys, save it with one-click form fill.
