# Emoji shortcodes

> Type a colon and a few letters to insert any of more than 1,800 emoji, just like in Slack and GitHub.

Type a colon and a few letters, and SimpleFill suggests the emoji you’re looking for, just like in Slack and GitHub. Now it works everywhere you write.

## Find an emoji

1. Type `:` followed by at least one letter, like `:smi`.
2. A dropdown shows up to five matching emoji.
3. Press **Enter** to insert the highlighted one, or click any of them.

Search matches emoji names and keywords too, so you don’t need the exact code:

```
:thanks   →  🙏
:party    →  🥳
:fire     →  🔥
```

## Close the colon

Know the code by heart? Type it in full, with a closing colon, and it turns into the emoji instantly:

```
:tada:    →  🎉
:+1:      →  👍
:smile:   →  😄
:rocket:  →  🚀
```

SimpleFill knows more than 1,800 emoji, with the shortcodes you know from Slack and GitHub, including aliases like `:thumbsup:`.

> [!NOTE]
> Smileys like `:D` and `:P` are safe. SimpleFill only highlights a suggestion once you’ve typed two characters after the colon, so pressing Enter after `:D` doesn’t swap it for an emoji.

## Where it works

Emoji work in text boxes, search boxes, text areas, and rich editors. They don’t pop up in password, email, or number fields.

## Turn emoji off

- **Everywhere**: switch off **Enable emoji expansion** in [Settings](https://simplefill.app/docs/settings).
- **On certain sites or fields**: add a [site rule](https://simplefill.app/docs/site-rules). For example, turn emoji off on `app.slack.com`, which has its own.
